Product Designer Interview Exercise - Fiserv
Proposed Customer Dashboard - Card Layout
As part of the interview process for a Product Designer role at Fiserv, I was given a design exercise focused on improving "Customer Page" for an existing app "CoPilot". The brief was intentionally vague, as the team wanted to assess how I, as a designer, would navigate ambiguity, define the problem, and structure my approach. My goal was to identify key usability issues, propose enhancements, and present high-fidelity design showcasing the improvements.
Quick Usability Assessment

Existing Customer Page
To shape this concept, I conducted a brief usability evaluation with two friends to gather insights on usability challenges and pain points. Their feedback helped identify areas needing improvement, from navigation clarity to visual hierarchy. I then explored multiple layout options and iterated on the UI to create a balanced design that enhances both aesthetics and functionality.
Challenges
The left navigation felt visually heavy, lacked hierarchy, and had no clear active state indicator.
Inconsistent button prominence, scattered filters, and redundant elements (e.g., sliders, multiple refresh buttons) may hinder usability.
Excessive headers and filters reduce the visible workspace for data.
Low-contrast text reduces accessibility, and certain fields may need explanations for new users.
Dense data rows with minimal hierarchy make scanning difficult, requiring users to check multiple columns for key details.
Improved Key Areas

Proposed Customer Dashboard - Table Layout, and Details Pop-up window.
The redesigned interface declutters data with white space, clear distinctions, and optimized spacing to improve readability and reduce cognitive strain.
Call-to-action buttons are visually distinct yet balanced, guiding users without overwhelming the interface.
The card layout simplifies quick scanning, while the table layout supports detailed comparisons, catering to varied workflows.
Fixing key columns during scrolling maintains essential reference points, reducing cognitive load and ensuring seamless navigation.
Pagination empowers users with controlled browsing, enabling quick access to needed information.
The refined sidebar navigation features intuitive icons and allows users to hide less-used options, optimizing screen space.
Filters and search are logically grouped for better usability, with status filtering simplifying data segmentation and color-coded tags enhancing key details' visibility.
A new pop-up window enables users to access customer details efficiently without leaving the dashboard, streamlining workflow.
Hover-over tooltips provide instant contextual guidance, enhancing clarity without cluttering the interface.
Outcome & Learnings
While I was not selected for the role, the design exercise reinforced my ability to analyze usability issues, present data-driven design solutions, and communicate effectively with stakeholders. This experience strengthened my approach to problem-solving and cross-functional collaboration.
